The Canopic Jars were used during the rituals of mummification processes. They held the four most important organs. The jars had the heads of the four sons of Horus. The first jar had the head of a baboon and was named Hapy. Hapy held the lungs. The second one was Imsety and had a human head. It guarded the liver. The third one had the head of a Jackal it was named Duamutef. Duamutef held the stomach and upper intestines. The fourth was a falcon and it was named Qebehsenuef. Qebehsenuef held the lower intestines. The jars were buried with the dead in a special chest with the mummy. They believed that the jars had the job to protect the organs that they contained. They believed that they would need these organs in the afterlife.The jars were made of limestone, calcite, or albastar. They could be five to ten inches in size. Each organ was wrapped in linen.
