King Ramses the
II
King Ramses reigned for 67 years during the 19th dynasty.
He was known as "Ramses the Great." He was the first king in history to
sign a peace treaty with his enemies. He became king at the age of 20. He
was the second longest ruling pharaoh. He was the pharaoh who left behind
the most monuments. He had a wife named Nefertari. He created many architectural
buildings including the famous Abu Simbel. It is located in Nubia. There
were two temples. The bigger one belonged to four gods. Amen, Re-Horakhty,
Ptah, and King Ramses the II himself. The smaller one was decorated with
pictures of himself and his wife Nefertari. The smaller one was made in
honor of the god Hathor. When Abu Simbel was found it was so encased in sand
that they didn't know if the figures were standing or sitting. He also
built a monument called the Ramesseum located on the west bank of the Nile
in Thebes. He was well known as a peacemaker and a great warrior. He died
at the age of 92. His tomb is located in the Valley of the Kings. When
his tomb was found it was empty. This was because the priests had moved it
so that it would be protected from grave robbers. His mummy is thought to
be the best preserved. When his mummy was found they were able to determine
that he had a large, beaky nose and that he was a natural red head which
was very rare back then.
